Independent Consultant, Risk Health & Safety
An independent consultant in the areas of Risk, Health and Safety, Mike has amassed extensive experience as a Safety Professional in the mining industry, with20+ years advocating for Health and Safety in the extractive Industry.
For 10 years Mike held the global position of Vice President, responsible for Health, Safety, Operational Risk and Security for Newmont Mining Corporation.
Mike was a member of the ICMM Health and Safety Task Force, holding the role of Chair for the Elimination of Fatalities Sub-Committee and ICMM Health and Safety Conference in Santiago 2012. Mike is a Co-author of the ICMM Critical Control Management Planning and guidance resource.
Mike is the Co-founder and past Chair of the Mining Industry Safety Round Table and one of the original members of theEarth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT).
Mike served as an advisor to the University Reno Nevada for the development of their Risk and Operations Management Curriculum and was appointed Advisory Board Member – Colorado School of Mines – NIOSH Grant Program. Mike played a key role in the development and delivery of an Executive Leadership Academy Program offered by the Colorado School of Mines.
Most recently, as an active member of a Global Elimination of Fatality initiative, Mike participated in assessments of over 40 operational facilities with the focus to understand the causation that leads to fatalities.
Prior to becoming a Safety Professional Mike served as a “Search and Rescue Specialist” with the Canadian Military.
Mike holds a BSc Degree – Health and Safety from Curtin University of Technology, Western Australia.
